From September 1991 - July 1992, I spent my sophomore year of college (U. of N. Carolina at Chapel Hill) studying abroad in Göttingen, Germany. During the 7-week Semester Break, I traveled with family, and on my own, through Greece, Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic), Denmark, Germany, Austria, Italy, & Spain. It's amazing what you can do on a student budget, when great public transit is available!
